It's an education for pregnant women

A PONTELAND physiotherapist has launched a programme to help pregnant women stay happy and healthy before and after birth.

Emma Secker is a qualified FitBack & Bumps instructor and she started doing ante and post natal educational sessions at Ponteland Leisure Centre earlier this month.

And the 30-year-old believes they are a useful way to spend the one-off Health in Pregnancy grant of 190 from the government.

"This is more than just an exercise class, as there are unique instructions to address things such as their changing body and posture, strengthening core muscles to help reduce back and pelvic pain and regaining a flat tummy post pregnancy," she said.

"The women doing the programme receive a pack including a booklet and laminated cards describing and showing the exercises so they can do them at home, which is useful because when I was pregnant I couldn't remember some of the things I did during exercise sessions.

"And it's good for them to come together to share their experiences and discuss how their pregnancy or post natal stage is going."

The advert by FitBack & Bumps came at a good time for Mrs Secker, who moved to Ponteland in June and wanted to do something local as she has a two-year-old son, Adam.

She said: "It was looking for people interested in women's health and pilates-based exercises and that appealed to me as it's very different to the work I do as a community physiotherapist mainly working with elderly people.

"It's still quite new but I'm really enjoying it so far and I can use my own pregnancy to relate to the women on the programme."
