Italian language and cookery day at Morpeth's Chantry Middle School with (left to right) pupils Cameron Dick, James Wells, James Dibbes, Sarah Willams, Italian student Alex Stamper, pulils Sophie Binns and Adam Blower and (front) Italian student Valentina Giovannini.

PUPILS enjoyed a pizza the action when they learned how to make a popular food the Italian way.

Newcastle University modern languages student Valentina Giovannini has been helping out in a Morpeth school since September as an assistant in French and Spanish lessons.

And recently she has used her family roots to show a group of Year seven pupils from Chantry Middle School and Technology College how to create a traditional Italian pizza, with help from fellow languages student Alex Stamper.

The children then put what they had learned into practice. They brought in their own ingredients to make their own toppings.

Miss Giovannini is applying to do a PGCE course to teach languages in school after her degree.

She said: “I’ve had a good experience here at Chantry so far and both the staff and students are really nice.

“The school has given me the opportunity to do a few different things and I’m glad it was happy for me to do the pizza session, which was fun for me and the pupils.

“Morpeth is a nice town, the people are friendly and there are some good places to go shopping.”

Funding for the activity and her time at Chantry has come from the Routes into Languages partnership scheme.
