Jobs might have to go at Council
COMPULSORY redundancies could be forced on Castle Morpeth Council workers to cut costs in budgets
The news comes as the authority organises a large-scale restructure of staffing and although senior councillors said they would be reluctant to take drastic measures, they warned redundancies are a possibility.
Executive member for Corporate Governance David Parker said:
"There may be some compulsory redundancies.
"The Executive regrets if there has to be redundancies. We certainly don't want that to happen because we recognise the impact that can have on the lives of people.
"We value our staff and we don't want to lose any of them at all, but we have to think of the work the Council has and it has to be done in the best way possible.
"We are also part of a national framework and clearly we can't go on employing people in licensing when there just isn't the work."
Further discussion on the issue was halted in the open Executive Board meeting on Tuesday, but budget proposals to go before the full Council tonight identify 140,000 in savings from a back office review and restructure.
