PONTELAND Middle School is top of the class after wowing a set of inspectors.

And the outstanding in all areas judgement from Ofsted is even more impressive because a more rigorous inspection framework was introduced in September.

The team that visited the school last month were full of praise for staff, governors and students.

Their report said: “The headteacher, Dr Caroline Pryer, leads a strong team of senior and middle leaders who share her dynamic vision and commitment to enriched teaching and learning.

“Leaders, including governors, have the highest expectations of themselves and the staff they lead.

“Their enthusiasm and drive is shared by all who work in the school.”

“The progress of year 5 children accelerates rapidly so that they are well above the average by time they leave the school at the end of year 8.

“Pupils are proud ambassadors for their school and thrive in a positive, calm, working atmosphere, where staff model the highest standards of respect and behaviour for pupils to follow.

“Pupils have excellent attitudes to their work. They work hard in lessons and produce a lot of work which is presented with care and pride. They make an exceptional contribution to their own learning.

“The governing body has an excellent understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the school, including pupils’ achievement data. Individuals and groups of governors have clear roles which they execute thoroughly.”

Inspectors observed 27 lessons taught by 25 teachers, spoke with members of staff and groups of students and took into account the views of 100 parents who responded to an online questionnaire.

The school had a celebration day to mark this success on Tuesday. It included all the pupils creating the school logo in human form.

Dr Pryer said: “We are absolutely delighted with our Ofsted report as it celebrates our outstanding school with delightful and high achieving pupils, proud parents, highly knowledgeable staff, committed governors and supportive friends.

“The children told the inspectors that they were developed as people and the school permeates positivity and calm, which I thought was really lovely of them to say.”
