Keep watch for animals

NORTHUMBERLAND Wildlife Trust is urging town residents to keep an eye on the animals in their area for an annual study.

This year’s People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) Living with Mammals Survey is taking place until June 26 and volunteers are needed to spend time observing a chosen site for eight or more weeks before reporting their findings online.

The data collected in previous years has demonstrated that urban sites provide important habitats for mammals — gardens make up between one third and a half of the green space in urban areas.

Trust Head of Conservation Steve Lowe said: “Town dwellers might consider that the proper place for wildlife is in the countryside, yet the boundaries between town and country are becoming more and more blurred as our urban spaces provide an increasingly important haven for wildlife species.”
