CHILDREN in Morpeth have been dressing down and tucking in to raise funds for an injured African safari driver.

Anne Sanderson, who runs Kenyan Travel, first heard of the plight of safari mini-bus driver Kasimu in 2010 when he injured his leg in an accident.

The driver had a steel plate fitted, but last year he was told that the plate had been fitted incorrectly and he will need another operation.

However, the procedure itself will cost £1,600 and there will be a three-month recovery period before Kasimu can return to work.

Mrs Sanderson said: “There is a lot of poverty out there so £1,600 is a lot of money and of course Kasimu also has the costs of being out of work for three months. We have done a lot to help the family, but we wanted to do something to find a way to get this money together.”

The business owner got in touch with Chantry Middle School and All Saints First School in Morpeth to see if they could help and both agreed to hold fund-raising non-uniform days.

Mrs Sanderson also made cakes to sell and gave talks on Africa in special assemblies.

As a result, hundreds of pounds have been raised to help the driver.

“When I was selling the cakes, the children were saying just keep the change. They have been really good and have been very supportive so I just want to say thank you,” said Mrs Sanderson.
