Knitting is all the rage at Morpeth
KNITTING is back in fashion at Morpeth according to a new entrepreneur.
Town centre resident Kym Hewison, a mum of three, has set up treaclehandknits which provides knitted items and materials.
She is also holding free monthly 'Knit2gether' nights at the Peppermint Tearoom, Newgate Street, for people to learn more about the skill and the latest yarns and patterns available.
And she has been surprised by the range of people turning up to click their needles.
"These sessions bring people together and give them an alternative to going down the pub," said Mrs Hewison.
"It's a good social activity and I'm pleased to say that we have a good mix of age groups, from those in their 60s and 70s to people in their 20s and 30s.
"Many wools and patterns are being targeted at younger people and from what I have seen, more of them have been taking up knitting in the last few years.
"People can come along and bring their knitting with them and talk to each other about what they are doing and swap ideas, while they can ask me for help with any problems they have and find out what yarns, accessories and gifts are for sale."
The 39-year-old hopes to open a shop in Morpeth with a business partner — who produces yarn from alpacas at Shadfen — in the next few months.
Two of her children go to Morpeth First School in Goosehill and other mums who have children in the same reception class as Mrs Hewison have also stepped into the business world this year.
Louise Drewitt and Marie Ward have opened Kid & Kaboodle in the Old Bakehouse Yard selling children's clothes, baby equipment, toys and other items.
And Alison Smith has become a self-employed Associate of Mini-IQ Limited, a company which specialises in educational and interactive books, toys and games for children aged 12 and under.
"Both myself and Louise were looking for a franchise to join in this field, so when we spoke to each other about it we decided to join together to start our own business and this means we can take it in turns to go to school events instead of missing out on all of them," said Mrs Ward.
"We were amazed when talking to the other mums from the class over coffee that another two were becoming entrepreneurs at around the same time and hopefully we will all do well."
The 'Knit2gether' events take place on the first Tuesday of each month from 7.30pm.
