Lifeboat group calls it a day

A GROUP of women who have collected thousands of pounds for a national charity which saves lives at sea have decided to call it a day.

The seven remaining members of the Morpeth Ladies Lifeboat Guild recently announced with great regret that they have closed the organisation because they were finding it harder to put in the necessary effort given the demands on their time.

Over the last 60 years, volunteers have carried out a range of fund-raising activities for the RNLI.

A statement from the seven women said: “This has not been an easy decision to make, but we have now become a small committee of retired ladies who have many family and other responsibilities and it is becoming increasingly more difficult to give our full commitment to raising funds for the RNLI.

“We wish to thank you for all your very valuable support over the years, which has always been very much appreciated, and whilst we are no longer a committee, we as individuals will remain loyal supporters of the RNLI.”

As well as house-to-house calls and street collections, the group put together and organised numerous special balls and dinners, coffee mornings, book sales, lectures and Christmas fairs to bring in money for the charity.

Widdrington Station resident Jane O’Driscoll joined the guild in 1985 and in 2010 she received a silver badge award at an RNLI ceremony in York.

She said: “It has been very fulfilling for everyone involved and it’s with a heavy heart that we have taken the decision to close.

“Over the years we have been thrilled with the generosity of local residents and our fund-raising events have generally been very well supported.”
