A SUCCESSFUL campaign about all things weddings has helped the county council to win a national honour.

The authority received a gold accolade at the Public Sector Communications Awards 2012 for ‘A marriage made in Northumberland’.

It was launched in July 2011 with the aim of raising awareness of the county as an ideal location to get married. Since then, there has been a 15 per cent increase in weddings across Northumberland, which has directly resulted in a boost of around £1million to its economy.

Executive member for customer and cultural services, Neil Bradbury, said: “Weddings showcase Northumberland as a holiday destination, making it more likely that guests will return later as tourists. Some weddings attract upward of 200 guests and this type of campaign ensures that those guests experience the best Northumberland had to offer.

“It is also wonderful to see the hard work done by the individual staff and larger teams recognised by their peers.”

These national awards acknowledge excellence in communication strategies and campaigns, as well as teams and individuals in local and national government, emergency services and not-for-profit bodies from across the UK.

And there was further success for Northumberland when the authority’s communications manager Ross Wigham received the Public Sector Communicator of the Year award for his work on a number of key projects across the county in the past few years.

He said: “I was really pleased and surprised to win the individual award, but I would like to thank everyone in the team for their support and hard work over the past three years.

“It’s really important that we are listening to people and communicating with them in the way they want. It’s a real honour to be mentioned and I was able to showcase Northumberland to a national audience.”
