HUNDREDS of children were ecstatic after a Ponteland school netted a very special guest.

All-time record goalscorer for Newcastle United, Alan Shearer, recently paid a visit to Ponteland Middle School.

After being revealed at a special assembly, he answered questions from pupils who are making their mark in a range of sports at county and national level and spoke to classes of students from all year groups.

The former England captain, who is now a pundit for the BBC’s Match of the Day show, was also given a tour of the school and shown its PE facilities while being told about its sporting vision for the future.

Ponteland Middle School Headteacher Caroline Pryer said: “Alan’s visit was the best kept secret in Ponteland and a fantastic surprise for the pupils.

“The children knew a VIP was coming and at the assembly, Head of PE Paul Baggett gave some obscure facts about him to build the excitement and when Alan stepped onto the stage the whole hall erupted in delight.

“He told the children who are doing very well at sport that an excellent attitude was vitally important to his success and he was very inspirational.

“Some of our pupils have told me that Alan’s words have already changed their lives.”

Before he departed, Shearer gave the school signed shirts and footballs to help its fund-raising.
