Emergency crews rescue a man who was buried when a hole he dug in the sand at Druridge Bay collapsed on him. He was airlifted to hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance.

A MAN was airlifted to hospital after becoming trapped in sand at Druridge Bay yesterday.

The 32-year-old from Bedlington had been digging a hole in the sand dunes when it fell in on him at around 4pm.

Police, ambulance, fire crews, the coastguard, Urban Search and Rescue and the Hazardous Area Response Team spent three hours trying to free the man, who was approximately 10 feet down the hole, but had his head above sand.

Specialist equipment was brought in to try to free him, but he was eventually released by hand. Oxygen was fed to him as he struggled to breathe.

He was treated at the scene by the Great North Air Ambulance doctor and then flown to Newcastle RVI with serious chest injuries.

He is now in a stable condition.
