Morpeth students stage 'Fame' - VIDEO
STUDENTS at a Morpeth school will be flying high when its production of 'Fame' hits the stage this week.
And everyone involved is hoping the mix of catchy music, slick drama and spectacular dance numbers will mean another successful King Edward VI School stage show, building on past hits such as 'Guys and Dolls', 'My Fair Lady' and 'Bugsy Malone'.
There is a cast of 68 from years nine to 13, including an orchestra and ensemble, with other students helping staff behind the scenes to put the musical together.
The musical version of the story, which follows the lives of a group of aspiring entertainers at New York's High School for Performing Arts, made its debut in 1988 and is based on the film and television series from earlier in the decade.
Head of Performing Arts Fleur Williams, who is directing the production with fellow teacher Paul Johnson, said: "This year we have an amazing cast with plenty of new talent that has emerged from all the year groups and they are one of the best in terms of their commitment.
"We were looking to do a musical to get bums on seats and we chose 'Fame' as it is a great combination of music, drama and dance.
"Our productions are becoming more popular, with 160 students auditioning this year, and Year Nine pupil Rebecca Megwa is one of our leads as she blew us away with her amazing voice and excellent acting skills.
"Those who come to see the production can expect superb choreography, excellent characterisation by the leads and live music ranging from orchestra to rock."
Rebecca, who enjoyed performing in productions when at Chantry Middle School, was thrilled to get the part of dancer Mabel Washington.
"I'm looking forward to performing in a major school production," she added.
"A group of us went to Edinburgh to see the musical and I didn't realise until seeing it for myself just how exciting it is and that it's a big cult show."
The other leads are Richard Pinkstone (Nick Piazza), Charlotte Christensen (Serena Katz), Jake Asbury-Sabin (Jose 'Joe' Vegas), Rosa Taylor (Carmen Diaz), Joe Driver (Tyrone Jackson), Katy Collings (Iris Kelly), Alisdair Inverarity (Schlomo Metzenbaum), Holly Sayer (Grace 'Lambchops' Lamb), Phil Parker (Goodman 'Goody' King), Laura Holmes (Miss Sherman), Sally Graham (Miss Bell), Lewis Garvey (Mr Myers) and Oli Brewster (Mr Scheinkopf).
Among the backstage team is former KEVI student Nick Woolley (Lighting Designer). He has recently got a lighting role on the Sound of Music production in London.
The KEVI show runs from Wednesday, March 18, to Saturday, March 21, at the Lower School Hall, with doors opening at 7.15pm each night.
