GROUNDWORK has started on a multi-million pound upgrade of a Ponteland college campus.

Contractor Robertson has begun work to develop a new tractor workshop and learning block at Northumberland College’s Kirkley Hall site.

The scheme is part of a wider £9.5million college improvement programme, which includes creating a state-of-the-art engineering workshop at its Ashington campus.

The investment at the two sites will include more than 5,000 square metres of new and refurbished buildings, as well as improvements to landscaping around the college. There will also be a new restaurant, which will be open to the public.

Principal and Chief Executive Stuart Cutforth said: “We are very excited that the building has begun. The new facilities will greatly enhance the teaching and learning facilities for our students and local employers.”
