Neck check to save a life
THE UK’s first Thyroid Cancer Awareness Week is being organised by a North East-based charity.
The Butterfly Cancer Trust, so named because the thyroid gland is the shape of a butterfly, aims to highlight the importance of getting any lumps in the neck checked out.
Thyroid cancer is now the fastest increasing cancer in women in the UK. It is most common in women aged between 25 and 40, but is also affects men and children.
Early detection can lead to a full recovery.
The awareness week runs from Saturday and includes a 30-second video, featuring former Miss Newcastle and Miss Great Britain Sophie Gradon, to be shown on ITV and YouTube.
There will also be a neck check clinic in the Blue Mall of the MetroCentre, Gateshead, on Saturday, September 24, from 10am to 5pm.
