Nightclub fined for under-age serving

NIGHTCLUB staff in Morpeth have been fined after serving alcohol to an under-age girl.

Police enlisted two volunteers, aged 14 and 16, to visit a number of pubs and off-licences in the town to check whether they would sell alcohol to youngsters.

Off-licences Best One in Newgate Street and Bals in Stobhill, as well as The Electrical Wizard pub in New Market, refused to serve the girls.

But both teenagers were allowed to enter Seen and one was served alcohol.

Fines were issued to the staff and management of the club.

While officers were at the premises two youths, aged 16 and 17, were arrested outside for being drunk and disorderly and were also fined.

Morpeth Inspector Dave Simpson said: “I’m very disappointed that licensed premises continue to serve alcohol to those who are under-age.

“They have a duty under the Licensing Act to prevent harm to children and in openly selling alcohol to children this indicates that this duty is not being taken seriously.

“Some of the premises we visited though were thoroughly professional and refused to serve the teenagers.”

He added: “We will continue to target under-age drinking in the local area and action like this sends a strong message out to all licensees that selling to children, or allowing kids to drink, will not be tolerated in Northumberland.

“I can assure them and the community that we will continue to run operations like this aimed at keeping the area safe.”

The volunteers were also served alcohol in The Market Tavern in Bedlington.
