On your marks to fight hunger

Some of the KEVI pupils who took part in the Race Against Hunger in aid of Save The Children.

MORPETH schoolchildren put on their running shoes to help others across the world in need of support.

Students from The Three Rivers Learning Trust – King Edward VI High School and Chantry and Newminster Middle Schools – decided to participate in the World Marathon Challenge for Save the Children on World Food Day.

Runners aged 11 to 13 from all three schools, and KEVI Sports and Student Voice Leaders who helped with the organisation, battled horrendous wind, rain and cold on the new athletics track to attempt to beat the world marathon record set by Kenyan Patrick Makau in a time of 2h03m38s.

One team of students recorded 2h20m49s and the other did the challenge in 2h22m43s, both times are currently in the top 200.

Anne Guy from the charity provided support, which included arranging a donation of water to the runners from Morpeth-based business Schweppes Abbey Well, and Gateshead Stadium loaned an official lapboard for the event.

Head of Student Voice, Leadership and Enrichment at KEVI Victoria Najafi said: “Congratulations to all students who participated, who have also been sponsored for the challenge.

“The times and their positions are a fantastic achievement bearing in mind the number of schools throughout the world that took part.”

The event also highlighted Save the Children’s campaign to get presidents and prime ministers to put the issue of tackling global hunger at the top of their agenda. It has set ambitious targets to dramatically reduce the number of children who die or are permanently damaged because they are unable to get food.
