Operation nabs drink-drivers

MORE than 1,000 motorists were stopped by Northumbria Police in a drink-driving crackdown over the festive period.

And 83 of them failed or refused to take a breath test.

The month-long operation ran from December 1 and was carried out by teams from the force’s Roads Safety Unit and Roads Policing Unit.

They carried out additional breath tests and worked closely with police neighbourhood teams to target those suspected of drink driving.

Chief Inspector Sarah Pitt said: “While the majority of motorists are clearly heeding the drink-drive message, it is disappointing to see that some still risk their lives and others’ lives by getting behind the wheel when they are under the influence.”

Drivers who fail the tests face a minimum of a year’s driving ban, a fine and big hikes in insurance premiums.
