Parking order will remove 63 road signs
PARKING restrictions at a Northumberland beauty spot will be changed to reduce signage clutter.
Northumberland County Council will make the changes to an area around Bolam Lake Country Park, west of Morpeth, amending a ‘no waiting every day 7am to 7pm’ order.
The restriction was introduced to stretches of road from Grangemoor to Low House, Belsay to Hartburn and Meldon to Low House in 1979.
Initially there was little signage associated with it, but after the council took responsibility for Civil Parking Enforcement last April the number of notices dramatically increased to meet legal standards and now 63 signs are in place.
Officers say that the current restriction serves no significant purpose and all signs can be removed simply by making a ‘no waiting at any time’ order and turning single yellow lines into double ones.
Following local consultation in October two people wrote in favour of the amendment, with one against, who complained that there had not been an accident in the area since the original restrictions were imposed.
Council officers said there would be no detriment to road users if the changes were made.
Members of the authority’s Planning and Environment Committee gave unanimous approval to the scheme.
The action comes as part of a countywide review after the Department for Transport urged the council to reduce road signage clutter wherever possible to improve the environment.
