People choose Tory candidate

A POLITICAL group in Northumberland is inviting members of the public to choose its prospective Parliamentary candidate.

In an unprecedented move in the North East, local Conservatives have issued an open invitation for voters in the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency, which stretches to Morpeth, to choose who will stand for the Party in the next general election.

The group regards the constituency currently held by Liberal Democrat MP Sir Alan Beith as a key marginal seat.

All residents who are registered to vote in the area have been invited to attend an Open Primary meeting next month in Alnwick to select the Conservative candidate from a shortlist.

Chairman of the Berwick Conservative Association John Rae said: “Local Conservatives are very excited to be inviting the public to choose our Parliamentary candidate.

“Our decision to open up this process to everyone registered to vote in our constituency is about bringing people into the political process and giving them more of a say in who their MP is. It is our hope that we can involve as many people as possible in this crucial political exercise.”

The meeting will take place at the Northumberland Hall in Alnwick on Friday, February 8, at 7pm. Anyone in the constituency wishing to attend should register by calling 01665 602106 or emailing primary@conservativesnorth.com
