Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Julie Prksen has stepped up her campaign to force Northumberland's Labour-run Council to rethink controversial plans to abolish free transport for 16-18 year olds.

A PETITION has been launched calling for a re-think of plans to abolish free post-16 student transport.

The Herald reported last week on budget proposals by Northumberland County Council’s Labour Group to charge 16 to 18-year-olds £450 a year for transport to their colleges or sixth forms.

Now Liberal Democrat campaigner Julie Porksen, who is standing to succeed Sir Alan Beith as MP for Berwick, has set up a petition calling for the plans to be scrapped.

She said: “I believe every young person has the right to attend school or college up to the age of 18 for free.”
