Pilgrims pay tribute

St Roberts pilgrimage in Morpeth.

MORE than 200 pilgrims made their way to Morpeth to pay tribute to the town’s saint.

The event took place at St Robert’s Church in Oldgate on Saturday, bringing together worshippers from across the Hexham and Newcastle Diocese.

The pilgrimage was organised in honour of St Robert of Newminster as part of a region-wide programme to celebrate North East saints during a Year of Faith.

There was a sung Mass, with the blessing of two new icons of St Robert, and prayers led by schoolchildren.

Despite the snow, the pilgrims set out on a walk to the ruins of Newminster Abbey, which the saint founded in the 12th century.

Those unable to make the journey could follow the route through a ‘virtual walk’ from the comfort of the church as it was displayed on screen.

During the afternoon, people could choose from one of four workshops – new church, new ways of praying, new ways of faith and a new saint, John Henry Newman.

The day ended with a final prayer around the icons.
