Plans unveiled for landscape improvements

PLANS have been unveiled to make a range of landscape and environmental improvements in Pegswood.

Groundwork North East and the Isos housing association have worked together to produce some designs that aim to create more attractive areas to walk, play and live.

Residents are currently being consulted on the ideas, which cover a number of streets in the village.

A small natural play area enclosed by low mounding, tree planting, swathes of spring bulbs and areas of seating have been proposed for areas off Whitefield Crescent and West View. The tarmac within the wide pavements near the road would be removed and replaced with groups of low shrubs, which would be protected by low railings.

In Ellis Square, the organisations would remove the existing hard surface on the central area of the mini-roundabout and plant a cluster of small trees as well as under plant with groundcover and spring bulbs.

There would be an enclosure of front gardens with a low hedgerow and simple railings in John Street and additional planting would take place in the front grass areas of the properties in William Street and South View that face the A197.

At Hebron Avenue, there are plans to install a low rail and paved strip to define edges and carry out tree planting. Isos tenants will be offered small trees that require minimum maintenance for their front gardens.

The extra works on the circular bit of grassed land include the installation of circular seating around the existing tree and arrangement of boulder clusters for natural play.

The rectangular section of grassed land would also get some new spring bulbs and the central area would be left open for informal games.
