Police launch campaign on domestic abuse
VICTIMS of domestic abuse are being urged to get the help they need.
Northumbria Police is asking ‘Are you walking on eggshells?’ to raise awareness of all forms of domestic abuse and encourage victims to come forward and get help.
The initiative follows extensive consultation with sufferers and the phrase came up when they described how it felt being in an abusive relationship. Officers also spoke to a range of partner organisations across both the public and private sectors.
As a result, officers are highlighting the support available to victims and encouraging them to come forward to the police and other agencies which can help.
A special helpline number is being publicised across the force area in shopping centres, doctors’ surgeries and on washroom doors.
Chief Constable Sue Sim said: “Whatever form domestic abuse takes, it’s rarely a one-off incident.
“It happens in every part of our communities regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, wealth and geography and is not just between partners, but can be between family members.”
The campaign will also target those who commit domestic abuse, with perpetrators warned they will face the consequences of their actions.
Victims can receive independent and confidential advice by calling 0800 066 5555. They should still ring 999 in an emergency.
