Police out in force to stop-check vehicles

ANOTHER 80 vehicles have been stopped and checked by police on roads around Morpeth.

Last week the Herald reported that more than 1,000 vehicles had been pulled over in recent weeks as part of an operation to clamp down on speeding and other driving offences.

And the Morpeth Neighbourhood Policing Team was again out in force on Wednesday, October 10.

Officers worked with the Vehicle Operator Services Agency and HM Revenue and Customs to check for defective and untaxed vehicles, people using red diesel and those driving without insurance.

One driver was summonsed for having no insurance and another for failing to wear a seatbelt.

Four vehicles had defects so serious that prohibition notices were issued on the spot and one car tyre was so worn that the driver had to replace it and have it re-checked before his vehicle could be driven.

Another driver was issued with a £500 fine for illegally using red diesel.

Morpeth Inspector Dave Simpson said: “This latest operation shows the importance of continuing to crack down on dangerous vehicles in the area.

“Motorists who drive on our roads in defective vehicles and those using vehicles without insurance pose a serious threat to other road users.

“By working alongside our partner agencies we can effectively deal with a range of traffic-related issues by issuing immediate fines and taking dangerous vehicles off the road.

“These latest results show it is necessary for us to continue this joint operation in future. Keeping our roads safe is a priority for us, which means cracking down on rogue drivers.”
