Pupils roll back the years to live life on the home front
Widdrington Station's Grange View First School teacher Yvonne Sim dresses up with pupils for a 'People Who Help Us' day.
SCHOOLCHILDREN in Widdrington Station put on their flat caps and dressed for life on the home front to mark their Second World War day.
Throughout the term, the Key Stage One and Key Stage Two pupils at Grange View First School have been learning about the conflict, which took place between 1939 and 1945, and the knock-on effect it had on families living in the UK.
They had a visit from Bailiffgate Museum staff, where they experienced a typical wartime lesson, made their own gas masks and boxes and labelled themselves as evacuees. They have also researched rationing, the blitz and the main defences used to protect the country.
Their studies culminated in the dressing-up day and the children looked the part by wearing clothes such as 1940s-style jackets, woolly jumpers, long dresses and boots. Staff also wore the attire.
The school’s Early Years section has been learning about ‘people who help us’ and pupils have had a number of visitors including fire and police officers, nurses and paramedics to help them better understand these jobs.
A people who help us dressing-up day was held to finish off the topic.
