Red squirrel fans will go nuts for this

MORPETH’S new red squirrel conservation group is inviting people to find out more about its work.

Squirrel Fest is being held in Morpeth Town Hall in association with other wildlife agencies and will also have activities to keep children entertained, including the presence of a giant red.

Adults can meet some of the Morpeth and District Red Squirrels (MAD RS) members, learn facts and figures relating to the species and discover why it is under threat, as well as what they can do to help the group.

It has gone from strength to strength since it was formed earlier this year. Volunteers cover the town centre and surrounding villages.

Kate Weightman, who co-ordinates MAD RS along with Sue Mitchell, said: “Reports of sightings of red and grey squirrels are increasing weekly and provide valuable information, enabling us to focus our resources on protecting the native reds and controlling the greys which threaten their existence.

“We are particularly grateful for the on-going support of the staff at Longhirst Hall, Joe’s Pet Supplies in Morpeth and the countryside team at Northumberland County Council.

“We work closely with the Red Squirrels Northern England conservation project and MAD RS is a member of the umbrella group Northern Red Squirrels.”

He added: “Its North East co-ordinator Sally Hardy in particular has been extremely helpful in supporting us while we find our feet.”

Squirrel Fest, which also includes a raffle, tombola and refreshments, will take place on Saturday morning from 9.30am.
