Road closed for urgent Morpeth bridge repairs

A BUSY Morpeth gateway will be closed overnight in a bid to save the Chantry Footbridge.

Telford Bridge will be closed to traffic from 11pm on Wednesday to 6am on Thursday to allow engineers to carry out emergency repairs to the Chantry Footbridge.

A large crane is being used to put in place a temporary support for the footbridge, which was damaged in recent floods. The positioning of the crane will require the A197 over Telford Bridge to be closed.

Northumberland County Council Highways Department has informed residents living nearby by letter and has advised that there will be some disturbance from noise and work lighting.

Traffic will be diverted from the A197 to St Marys Field, Church Walk, Curly Kews and Oldgate.

However, there will be no HGV access via this route. Access will be via the A1 at Fairmoor Interchange.
