STATE-OF-THE-ART facilities at Morpeth Rugby Club have been officially opened.

Town Mayor Joan Tebbutt cut the ribbon on Saturday as members showcased the new gym, kitchen extension and meeting/dining room.

Representatives of the Banks Community Fund, the Rugby Football Union and Northumberland County Council, who together provided 75 per cent of the funding, were present along with members of the club’s 1975 side as the new room is called The 1975 Room. All the work was carried out by N.B. Clark – an ex-club captain’s firm.

The first team in 1975 were one of the best in the UK. They defeated London Irish, Bath and Rosslyn Park, considered the best side in the country at the time with a British Lion, All Black and another couple of internationals.

Alan McMillan played for England, Brian Keenleyside was selected for the British Police and eight of the team represented their county.
