A STANNINGTON woman battled through the pain to complete the Great North Run in aid of a blood cancer charity.

Fiona Lamb did the 13-mile race for the first time on Sunday to raise funds for Anthony Nolan and has now collected more than her target of £400.

After hearing about the good cause from Nell McAndrew when she was running last year, Fiona added her name to the bone marrow donor list and this meant her name was on the email list asking for people to take part in the iconic race from Newcastle to South Shields.

Earlier in the summer she did a collection in Morpeth town centre with three friends and this raised £110.28 of her total.

“It has always been on my mind to do the run as I was told that there’s a fantastic atmosphere along the course and that’s what I found on Sunday,” she said.

“At mile nine, my sciatica started to really affect my running but I noticed another woman hobbling and we joined up and got each other through the remaining few miles.

“Despite the discomfort I had an amazing experience and the support from the crowds and other runners was incredible. Hopefully, I will get my fund-raising up to £500 and I’m very grateful to all those who made a donation during my Morpeth collection.”

Other runners on Sunday included Dave Taylor from Ponteland, who was taking part in his seventh Great North Run for St Oswald’s Hospice. He ran with the Olympic Torch he carried during the relay in June.

Street dance teacher Amy North of Claire’s Dance Academy in Stobhill, Morpeth, had a fantastic run and raised £300 for the Susan Channon Breast Cancer Trust.

Dancers from the group ran in the Junior (Jessica Holmes, Lily McClughin, Lola Priest, Sarah Thompson, Hannah Smith, Natalie Newton, Bethany Robertson) and Mini (Gabrielle Jones, Alfie Holmes-Wharton) Great North Runs.

They collected more than £500 for the Epilepsy Foundation – a charity linked to members of the dance school.
