Schools urged to be top of the class

SCHOOLS across the county are being urged to aim for top of the table in a new recycling scheme.

They will be rewarded with points for any re-use and waste management activities they do. Teachers are asked to provide a piece of evidence, such as a digital photograph or poster, by email for each one.

Options for Northumberland County Council’s Recycling Green Points Challenge include improving existing recycling areas, reducing food waste and collecting litter.

Points gained will be added to a league table which will be regularly updated so schools can see how many points they have in relation to others.

Council Executive Member for Highways and Neighbourhood Services Alan Thompson said: “We are very keen to encourage new ways of recycling and challenges like this develop the interest among local schools.

“This is also an exciting opportunity for the young people of Northumberland to showcase their competitive side as this is a valuable skill for their future.”

Schools can join from now until May 3, 2013, and activity evidence can be submitted at any time up until May 24. The winner will be presented with a trophy as part of next year’s Love Northumberland Awards.
