Search begins for champions of environment

An annual search to find Northumberland’s environmental heroes is under way.

Northumberland County Council is inviting nominations for its Love Northumberland awards, which recognise people and projects that enhance the environment.

Categories include Best New Project, Best Urban Project, Best Coast or Countryside Project, Best Business Project, Best Young People’s Project, Best Children’s Project and Outstanding Individual.

A prize-giving ceremony will be held at The Alnwick Garden on Tuesday, July 22, when the Duchess of Northumberland will present the awards.

The winners will receive £250 and the runners-up £100 to spend on their project or other community work.

Council Head of Highways and Neighbourhood Services Andy Rutherford said: “Every year we have been extremely impressed with the wealth of community and voluntary effort that goes on day in, day out, right across Northumberland.

“Through the annual Love Northumberland awards we aim to go some way to rewarding all of this exceptional work by highlighting just some of the projects and initiatives that make our communities great.

“I would encourage community groups and volunteers to send in nominations. The application process is not onerous and could result in a prestigious award.”

The awards are sponsored by The Banks Group for the third year running.

Details and application forms can be found online at www.northumberland.gov.uk/love or by calling 0845 600 6400.

The closing date for nominations is Friday, June 20.
