Ponteland Leisure Centre has netted a life-saving machine.

And football legend Alan Shearer came along to thank North East Hearts and Goals after the charity donated a defibrillator free of charge.

The North East Ambulance Service will be training all 60 employees at the centre, located off Callerton Lane, to use the equipment and it will now be logged by the service as a ‘static site’.

Phil Evans, general manager at Ponteland Leisure Centre, said: “We are really excited to be the newest static site in Northumberland and to welcome the North East Ambulance Service to come and train our 60 employees.

“In addition, it was an absolute pleasure to have Alan Shearer come along to Ponteland and show his support for the local community and help us to promote this fantastic news.”

North East Hearts and Goals is committed to raising awareness of sudden cardiac arrest and it raises funds to provide external defibrillators for schools, colleges and sports clubs in the region.
