Spiritual journey takes pupils back in time

A PEACEFUL priory became a hive of activity as hundreds of children embarked on a journey back in time.
The Lifepath initiative at Brinkburn Priory brought together about 450 children from 16 schools across Northumberland in four days of activities to learn about the area’s spiritual heritage.
The event, which was jointly organised by The Mustard Tree Trust, Scripture Union, Berwick Baptist Church and Barnabas in Schools, explored the life of monks and the site’s history, as well as encouraging the youngsters to consider their own path through life.
Each day began with a procession to the priory, followed by a lively singing session and introduction to St Aidan, who influenced the development of Christianity in Northumbria.
Children were then split into groups for four interactive workshops, ranging from a spiritual Prayer Journey to creative sessions in illuminated lettering, harps, gardening and medieval games. The sessions closed with 30 seconds of silence.
The Lifepath days ended with children building a cairn of stones to symbolise their participation in the project.
Organisers have thanked English Heritage, which manages the priory, for its support.
