Staff turn to technology to spread the word
SCHOOL staff in Morpeth are turning to technology to spread the written word to a wider audience.
King Edward VI School (KEVI) colleagues Clare-Marie Roxby and John White have teamed up to record books for Calibre Audio Library.
The scheme, based in Buckinghamshire, provides audio books for people nationwide, particularly those who are visually impaired, have dyslexia, or are unable to read a printed book because of a physical disability.
The Morpeth staff are using KEVI’s radio studio to record the books, with Classics and Latin teacher Ms Roxby narrating and Mr White, a member of the school’s technical team, recording and editing.
They have already submitted a number of titles and their first, Last Fling by Sue Gee, has been through the checking process and entered Calibre’s extensive library.
Calibre Communication Officer Nicole Russell said: “Although we are a national charity with 19,000 members, including 1,200 young Calibre members, we send our audio books to over 500 people in the North East.
“We know from the hundreds of letters we receive from grateful members how much they enjoy our books. It’s great that this Morpeth school is involved in bringing so much reading pleasure.”
KEVI Headteacher Simon Taylor said: “King Edward VI School is delighted to support Calibre Audio Library. We are committed to social inclusion and to help provide opportunities that enhance the experiences of our community.
“Access to literature is essential for education, as well as the pleasure it provides.”
