Steer clear of highway cuts

COUNCILLORS have been urged to steer clear of more cuts to highways services after making 70 people redundant.

The county’s highways and neighbourhood services section is consulting staff on axing 70 jobs and creating seven new ones, at the same time it is shaking up snow clearing operations.

Executive Member Alan Thompson told scrutiny committee members last week: “When you are looking at cuts, look at other areas. It’s been sacrificed on too many occasions in the past.”

Coun Thompson added that there was serious under-investment over at least two decades in highways and neighbourhood services, leaving serious problems to address, and said it is vital that such services are working well.
