STUDENTS will have more scope to enhance their skills after Northumberland College was licensed to run the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The college is only the second directly licensed centre in the county, behind Northumberland County Council, and will offer all three bronze, silver and gold level programmes.

Student mentors, teaching staff and volunteers have all been trained as award leaders and the scheme will be open to young people aged from 14 to 24.

It offers a wide ranging personal programme of activities, including helping the community, improving fitness, developing practical and social skills, going on an expedition and taking part in a residential course.

College Head of Faculty for Sport, Health, Care and Foundation Learning Joyce Guthrie said: “We are delighted to have been approved to run the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

“The awards will be open to all of the college students and will give them the opportunity to greatly enhance their skills and personal development.

“The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is the world’s leading achievement award for young people and is highly valued by employers and universities.

“Students who achieve an award show commitment and therefore greatly enhance their opportunities for employment and university placements.”
