Students sample question time with politicians

YOUNG people can have their own question time with county politicians at an event in Morpeth next week.

The session will encourage political debate and give those taking part, whether they are school, college students or apprentices, the opportunity to discuss issues important to them.

It follows on from a number of successful workshops where young people in Northumberland discussed a range of matters facing them and their peers.

Speakers will include Northumberland MPs and county councillors from the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat parties and Morpeth Town councillor Nic Best, who is a Green Party member.

Attendees will be able to prioritise issues discussed at previous workshops according to their relevance by using an e-voting system. Refreshments will also be available.

Northumberland County Council Democratic Services Manager Paddy Gascoigne said: “With local elections coming up on May 2, it’s important to raise awareness of democracy with people of all ages.

“This is a great opportunity for young people in our county to get their voices heard and learn more about what their political representatives do on a daily basis.”

The event will take place on Friday, March 15, at St James’s Community Centre in Wellway, from 5.30pm until about 8.15pm.

To submit questions, or to reserve a place, contact democratic services on 01670 622616 or email demserv.ar@northumberland.gov.uk
