Teenagers fly the flag at global conference
TWO more teenagers from Morpeth will get to enjoy a political American adventure after their applications were approved.
Freddie Bowles and Calvin Willis, Year 12 students at King Edward VI School, will be attending a Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC) in Washington DC and New York in the USA this summer.
They are following in the footsteps of Year 13 Student Voice Ambassador Calum Thomson, who attended it 2012 .
The GYLC provides young people from across the world, aged between 15 and 18, with a greater understanding of their roles as global ambassadors as they analyse a range of concepts including communications, diplomacy, law, human rights, peace, security, economics and the role of the United Nations (UN).
As well as an exercise which simulated a typical scenario that would be discussed by the UN Security Council, Calum’s trip involved seeing a number of sights including the White House and Smithsonian Institution in Washington, Times Square, a Broadway show and Ellis Island in New York and the Liberty Bell in nearby Philadelphia.
Going to the USA is extra special for Calvin as this is the first time he has been abroad.
He added: “I am honoured to get this opportunity to be able to attend this conference in the USA. I am looking forward to meeting new people and developing my skills.
“To be able to represent the school and the country in this way is amazing.”
Each session of the GYLC is designed to educate, inspire and motivate students by giving them the opportunity to explore cultural differences first-hand, absorb diplomatic skills, build confidence and enhance decision-making skills in an atmosphere that is both challenging and fun.
Freddie said: “I can’t wait to go to the USA and take part in this conference. I am honoured to be representing the United Kingdom and KEVI at a global event.
“I am keenly looking forward to meeting lots of new people from around the world and to experience American culture.
“Many thanks goes to Ms Victoria Najafi (Student Voice, Leadership & Enrichment Co-ordinator at the school) for nominating myself and Calvin to attend and participate in such a prestigious event.”
