The wonder of woollies

THIS woolly wonder will be going on a UK tour after five weeks of hard work by just one person.
The yellow and blue 40ft-long scarf to raise awareness of the services provided by the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) was made by Susan Tait, one of the knitting team members at Treacle Wool Shop in Morpeth.
It weighs 4.8kg and 48 balls of wool were used for what she called The Very Long Scarf, which is in the colours of the national organisation.
The project was devised by the Newcastle CAB branch and when Treacle Wool Shop owner Kym Hewison heard about it, she asked Ms Tait if she wanted to take on the challenge.
She said: “My knitters are very skilled and I make sure they only knit items that they want to do, but I thought this would be a task which would interest Susan. When she next came into the shop I asked her if she wanted to take on something a bit quirky and I was delighted when she agreed.
“It took some time to work out things like how much wool was required and how many stitches per row were needed, but she made good progress and we got more excited as it developed.
“I can’t believe how beautiful the finished scarf is and it’s warm and durable – exactly what was required for the UK tour. It’s so big that a bed sheet had to be adapted into a bag to carry it around.”
The first port of call for the scarf is Newcastle after approval was given by the city council. The location has yet to be decided but a crane will be involved.
Newcastle CAB Chief Executive Shona Alexander said: “When I saw it for the first time, I was overwhelmed by its size and I know it will look great in all the cities and towns it is going to visit.”
