Tool thieves on the prowl
TOOL thieves are on the prowl in Morpeth, with a series of incidents reported.
Three incidents in the town overnight last Thursday and Friday saw vans broken into and equipment stolen from inside.
In Kings Avenue a van that had been left insecure was targeted and demolition hammers worth hundreds of pounds were stolen, while in Green Acres property including a hammer drill, saw, router and hand tools were taken from a van.
During the same period, thieves stole a nail gun worth hundreds of pounds from an insecure van in Highmoor.
Superintendent Mick Paterson said: “It’s important van owners ensure they lock their vehicle, even if only leaving it for a few seconds and especially overnight.
“In these instances thieves have stolen from vans where expensive items have been left inside overnight and tools have been stolen which could be important to the owner’s livelihood.
“Although it’s an inconvenience to take valuables out of the van each night and put them back in the morning, taking a few minutes to do this could prevent a costly break-in for the owner.
“We’re carrying out inquiries to trace the people responsible and I’d urge anyone who sees suspicious activity in their neighbourhood to report it to us as soon as possible so we can take action.”
Drivers are advised not to leave anything on display, fit a good alarm and warning stickers and park in busy, well-lit areas.
Anyone with information about the thefts should call police on 101, ext 69191, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
