A MORPETH cyclist braved torrential rain to complete a major charity challenge.

Jonathan Epworth rode the gruelling 150-mile Marie Curie Cancer Care Coast to Coast cycle ride from Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria to Sandsend in North Yorkshire for the third year in a row.

The three-day event, organised by the Purple Mountain organisation, was made even more difficult by the bad weather. There was heavy rain at times on all three days.

“We had to deal with tricky conditions because of the rain, particularly on the off-road sections where we needed to take extra care and one area was deemed too dangerous to cross,” said Mr Epworth.

“In the past the finish used to be mainly downhill to Scarborough, but this time the last 20 miles were mostly uphill to Sandsend.

“Despite all this, we just got on with things and I still enjoyed the challenge. I was in the first group and we waited for all the other riders to join us so we could ride into the finish together, which felt great.

“The event is something I want to do every year if I can, hopefully I will get some sunshine in 2013.”

The Manager of Leeds Building Society’s Blyth branch has raised more than £650 so far.

He did the first two rides in memory of his grandfather, who died of cancer when he was a child, and this year he dedicated it to his father-in-law Nick Stawart, who passed away last October following a short illness.
