Transport cuts on hold

PROPOSALS for major cuts to the funding for transport for post-16 students have been removed for further consultation.

The planned cuts to this scheme, which allows certain students to travel free to their chosen place of education, were among some of the most controversial from this year’s budget, but on Tuesday, the council’s Deputy Leader Dave Ledger said that the Labour Administration was “now looking at a range of options”.

But not all of the councillors are supporters of providing free post-16 transport.

Independent councillor Paul Kelly said that the scrapping of fees by the last Administration had the “unintended effect of damaging the viability of high schools”.
