THE new Area Dean of Morpeth is looking forward to taking on extra responsibility.

Reverend John Park, Vicar of Bothal and Pegswood with Longhirst, was recently licensed by the Right Reverend Frank White, Assistant Bishop of Newcastle, in a service of welcome at St Margaret’s Chapel in Pegswood.

In addition to his work as vicar, Mr Park becomes the senior member of the clergy in the Morpeth Deanery – the local group of parishes centred on Morpeth and extending from Kirkwhelpington in the west to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in the east.

He succeeds the Reverend Canon Dr Dagmar Winter, who remains Priest-in-Charge of Kirkwhelpington with Kirkharle, Kirkheaton, and Cambo and Rural Affairs Officer for the Diocese of Newcastle.

She has also recently taken on the role of Adviser for Women’s Ministry to the Bishop of Newcastle.

Mr Park was a teacher for 20 years before he came into the ministry in 2002, joining the deanery as a curate in Morpeth. He was appointed Vicar of Bothal and Pegswood with Longhirst seven years ago.

“I’m looking forward to helping the parishes in the deanery, particularly those that are waiting for new appointments, and working with all my colleagues in the ministry” he said.

“I will also be supporting the people living in the parishes as best I can.”

Members of the Morpeth Deanery Synod (the representative body of the parishes in the deanery) broke into a long applause as the Assistant Bishop read the formal notice of Mr Park’s appointment as Area Dean.
