Villagers salute new pub

LONGHIRST Hall is hoping its new state-of-the-art pub can become a local for villagers.

The 200-seat Collingwood Bar — part of a 2m programme of development at the complex near Morpeth — is now open to the public and Longhirst residents were invited to its launch.

The extended facility, which now serves food, will also benefit those using the hotel, function rooms and conference facilities.

It is named after Admiral Lord Cuthbert Collingwood, who led the British fleet to victory at the Battle of Trafalgar after the death of Lord Nelson.

Longhirst Group Chief Executive Stephen Cowell said: "Our previous bar was too small so we have created something bigger and more modern with different sections such as quiet zones and areas with televisions.

"We have gone out of our way to make Longhirst villagers welcome and the responses so far, including at this launch event, have been very positive, especially as there's no pub in the village.

"We are offering them a discount card as well, part of our effort to make Longhirst Hall a big part of the community.

"It is already being enjoyed by those who come to stay here and we now have a gathering place for large groups of people to go before they use a function room for things like wedding receptions and parties."

A range of British pub food prepared by hotel Head Chef Graeme Toms is available, with special dishes including Northumbrian Steak and Collingwood Cask Ale Pie.

Two recently launched drinks — Collingwood Festival Ale and Royal Sovereign Rum made by Wylam Brewery — are also being served.

Earlier, Susan Collingwood-Cameron officially opened the bar and was then taken to see a full length portrait of her famous great-great-great uncle, which has been prominently displayed in the Dobson-designed hall since the painting was purchased three years ago.

Mr Cowell added: "Admiral Collingwood is a man I have long admired. As his family home was in Morpeth he is very much regarded as a local hero so naming our new bar after him was an easy decision to make."
