Warning of fishing rules

ANGLERS have been reminded that
the coarse fishing season closes tomorrow.

Rivers will be off limits until June
15 to increase the success of fish spawning.

The Environment Agency has warned that anyone caught breaking the rules may be prosecuted.

Fisheries Enforcement team leader Kevin Summerson said: “The river
close season for coarse fishing is important.

“By preventing coarse fishing for three months, between March 15 and June 15 inclusive, it allows the fish an uninterrupted spawning period.

“This increases the success of the spawning, in addition to providing wider environmental benefits.

“Our fisheries enforcement officers will be out patrolling waters regularly during the close season and anyone found fishing illegally may face prosecution and a hefty fine.”

Fishing is still permitted on many canals and stillwaters, depending on landowner agreement.

The salmon open season started on February 1 and the trout open season begins on Friday, March 22.

All anglers need a valid rod
licence from the Environment
Agency, which runs from April 1 to March 31.

The licence fee is re-invested
to improve all fisheries, including
rivers.

Licences are checked regularly and fishing without one can lead to a substantial fine.

Illegal fishing can be reported on 0800 807060.
