Laura Weightman has taken the 1500m title at the British Championships and sealed her spot at this summer’s European Championships in the process.
The 22-year-old won this evening’s final in Birmingham, crossing the line in 4:09.77. The track star, from Lesbury, finished ahead of second-placed Laura Muir (4:10.01) and Hannah England (4:12.37) in third.
The Championships are doubling up as trials for the European Championships and her top-two finish means that the Morpeth Harrier will compete in Zurich in August, having already run the qualifying time.
Weightman’s victory in the Midlands also banishes the demons of 11 months ago, when she was caught by another athlete during the 2013 British Championships 1500m final and had to retire.
Success in Birmingham this time round comes on the back of her being selected for the Commonwealth Games, which starts next month, and running a 4:02.72 personal best in the Diamond League in May.
Meanwhile, fellow Northumbrian, Emma Pringle, came seventh in the women’s triple-jump final, which was won by Yamile Aldama (13.60m).
The 22-year-old Alnwick lass, representing Gateshead Harriers, jumped 12.54m. It was her first outdoor appearance at the British Championships.
