Hauxley Nature Reserve's visitor centre is demolished.

HEAVY snow did not deter plans to demolish a fire-ravaged visitor centre.

The facility at Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s Hauxley Nature Reserve, near Druridge Bay, was severely damaged in an arson attack in 2010.

The wooden building was completely engulfed by the blaze and more than £120,000 of damage was caused.

The dilapidated centre was due to be demolished last autumn, but the work was halted after a family of barn owls decided to nest in the old building.

Their chicks finally flew the nest at the end of October and the wildlife charity began to put its plans into place.

However, when the day dawned for the demolition to take place last Monday, workers had to brave severe winter weather to carry out the task.

Nevertheless, the work was completed in blizzard conditions by Harbour Enterprises.

Funding from the People’s Postcode Lottery ensured that volunteers could be on site throughout the week to ensure the safety of visitors while the work was going on.

Now the trust can move on to proposals to build a new centre at the reserve and staff are exploring a number of funding options for the project.
