Young mum died of natural causes

A YOUNG mum who collapsed suddenly while she was cleaning her daughter’s bedroom died of natural causes, a coroner has ruled.

Sian Turnbull died at her home in Pegswood in September, despite having no history of medical problems, North Northumberland Coroner Tony Brown heard on Tuesday.

The Ashington-born teacher is one of an estimated 500 people each year who die from sudden adult death syndrome (SADS) – an umbrella term covering a number of cardiac causes of death in young people.

The 33-year-old was healthy and did not smoke, the inquest, held in Ashington, heard.

Pathologist Dr Robert Stirling, who carried out a post-mortem examination, found no obvious cause of death, and said Miss Turnbull’s heart was further examined by cardiac pathology expert Dr Mary Sheppard at London’s Brompton Hospital.

Dr Stirling, said Dr Sheppard, who was involved in setting up the organisation CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young), had found no obvious abnormalities in the heart or any of its structures.

He said that as SADS was becoming more publicly recognised, the number of cases were on the increase.

Dr Stirling added: “It came out of the blue, and very tragically for the family.

“All major organs were completely normal.”

Recording his verdict, Mr Brown said: “Sian was simply cleaning one of her daughters’ bedrooms when she was found without any signs of life.”
