COUNCILLORS are calling for Morpeth gateway improvements to be made a priority.

County members Ian Lindley and David Bawn are demanding urgent work to the Telford Bridge southern approach to enhance the area and find a permanent solution for traffic flow.

Unpopular traffic lights will be removed from the junction this weekend and the councillors say there is an opportunity to upgrade the whole area.

Coun Lindley said: “This key area needs upgrading. I have long believed that the council should look at a shared space design solution that would make the area better for drivers and pedestrians.”

Coun Bawn said: “The difficulties with the junction at the north of the bridge have caused a real issue. I am hopeful that now those issues are going to be settled, the council can take this opportunity to upgrade and improve the area at the southern end of the bridge.”
