Memorial for war hero

SPECIAL commemorative paving stones will be laid in a Northumberland village to honour a hero in the First World War.

The Government has announced that the permanent memorial will be installed at all the home towns or villages of soldiers who were awarded the Victoria Cross for valour to mark the centenary of the conflict.

The recipients include James Johnson, who was born in Widdrington.

In addition, more help will be made available for local communities to restore and refurbish their war memorials.
